[Spain Travel Guide] #3 When Is the Best Time to Visit Spain?

If you’ve decided to travel to Spain, the next question that naturally arises is: When is the best time to go?

Choosing the right time to travel to Spain depends largely on your own schedule. Travel doesn’t just require money and energy—it also demands time. Only when you have the leisure to truly enjoy it does the journey begin in earnest.

Once your schedule is sorted, the next factors to consider are Spain’s weather, cost of travel, and events and festivals happening throughout the country.

Spain’s Weather

If you enjoy colder weather, winter in Spain might be the right time. Prefer the heat? Then summer it is. However, for most travelers, the ideal time to visit is when it’s neither too hot nor too cold.

Spain experiences four distinct seasons, much like Korea.
Winter temperatures typically remain above freezing, though occasionally they may dip to -1 or -2°C. While these numbers may not sound too harsh, Spain’s winter wind and chill can make it feel colder than expected. For that reason, winter is often considered less favorable for travel.

In contrast, Spain’s summers can be intense—especially midday, with temperatures rising to 40–45°C. In southern regions, it can even approach 50°C. Fortunately, the dry heat means that standing in the shade offers some relief. Rather than humid heat, Spain’s summer feels like direct, blazing warmth—hence the well-known tradition of siesta, the Spanish midday nap.

Even if the sun stays up for longer, walking around under the intense rays all day can quickly lead to exhaustion or even heatstroke. It’s important to plan accordingly.

Cost of Travel in Spain

Spain attracts tourists from all over the world year-round. This means that the concept of peak or off-peak season has little impact on general travel costs. Accommodation prices and airfare remain relatively stable throughout the year.

During school vacations, there’s an uptick in young travelers, while other times see a wide range of age groups exploring the country.

If you’re planning on shopping in Spain, time your trip around the country’s major sale periods known as “Rebajas”. These take place twice a year—typically in January–February and July–August—and can vary slightly by region. It’s a great opportunity to find deals on fashion and goods.

Events and Festivals in Spain

Spain is a country of vibrant, year-round celebrations and world-class events.
Here are some key highlights you might want to plan your trip around:

  • Christmas celebrations across the country and the Three Kings Day (Leyes de los Reyes Magos) in early January

  • Mobile World Congress (MWC) in February, one of the biggest tech events in the world, held in Barcelona

  • Las Fallas de Valencia, the March firework and parade festival

  • Semana Santa (Holy Week) and Easter processions in spring

  • La Tomatina, the famous tomato-throwing festival held on the last Wednesday of August in Buñol, Valencia

  • San Fermín Festival in Pamplona in July, known worldwide for the Running of the Bulls

  • The Spanish football season, featuring iconic clubs like Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, is another compelling reason to visit. Watching a La Liga or Champions League match live can be the highlight of your trip.

Recommended Travel Periods

So, when is the best time to go?

Personally, I recommend traveling between April–June or September–November.
These months offer mild weather, clear skies, and an overall comfortable travel experience—perfect for leisurely exploring all that Spain has to offer without the extremes of summer or winter.
