The University of Murcia (UM) is a one-hundred-year-old institution that traces its origins to the thirteenth century. UM is an international institution which is a reference center for higher education in the Region of Murcia (south-eastern Spain). UM focuses on academic excellence and plays a very important role in research, teaching and innovation. At the same time, it acts as an essential social engine that spreads out in the Mediterranean basin through its international excellence Campus Mare Nostrum (CMN). The UM is a pioneer in e-government, with a clear strategy towards the digital university. Academic and cultural activities take place in twenty-one schools. Seventeen of them are located in the Espinardo campus (North part of the city) and the rest are distributed in La Merced (downtown), Health Sciences (El Palmar and Lorca) and Sport Sciences at the sea-side (San Javier).
Today, UM has more than 30,000 students, about 3,000 researchers/lecturers and 1,216 administration staff. UM is a public and comprehensive university that offers 53 undergraduate, 71 master and 35 doctoral programs in the fields of Arts and Humanities, Engineering, Health Sciences, Sciences, Social Sciences and Law. These schools exhibit international recognition and important quality certifications, the Veterinary School is one of the few in Spain being awarded with the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education (EAEVE) accreditation; the School of Education has been recognized with the ECA Certificate for Quality in Internationalization (2016); the Computer Sciences, Biology and Veterinary schools have received the national AUDIT accreditation.
